As an entrepreneur, self motivation and goal setting are two things you absolutely must learn to tackle head on. Over the course of my 15+ years in business I’ve pushed myself to constantly grow & improve. Sometimes in baby steps, other times in great strides.
In today’s video I talk about the word can’t, and doing the very things you think you cannot do. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Hey Lynn,
I have been doing lots of cans so far this year, BUT there is ONE goal that has been really getting to me.
I CAN and I WILL get my e-book written for launch on August 10 th.
Thank you for a boost in the butt at JUST the right time!!!
I hope you and Slim are having an AWESOME “can” day!
smiles,
p.s. I hope you are finding some relief from the heat in your neck of the woods. It’s been awesome weather here but less rain than normal. GREAT beach weather…
Excellent! I am working on finishing a similar project this month, so wishing you great luck with that.
It’s been very hot and dry here. We did finally get some rain this week, with more in the forecast – along with cooler temps. Both of which I’m really looking forward to! *cheers*
Thank you Lynn for this great video sharing … wakes up the mind to think what I have done the past 6 months and plan what to do the next 6 month before 2013
It’s a great time of year to analyze your progress and really kick things into gear for the last half!
Why do we naturally let our Can’ts define our productivity, successes, achievements, happiness? We automatically say we’ll NEVER get that done. Or I just CAN’T seem to finish that task.
Why isn’t our first thought, our FIRST NATURAL instinct… I CAN payoff that bill. I CAN save that much money. I CAN get that degree. I CAN meet that deadline. I CAN take that dream trip.
We can “predict our own future” if we’d just use more CANS than CAN’TS!
Sherie, unfortunately I think we “predict our own future” when we use more CAN’TS as well. It’s just not the future we want.
Our actions are definitely controlled by our thoughts, which is why this is SO important. What we think we can, or what we think we can’t, is exactly right!
Wow, I remember that 25th Hour challenge on Mark’s site – I think that was my first contact with you
This week I’ve been using your early morning system – I get up at 5:30 to meditate and exercise, and start work by 7. I’ve usually finished my MITs by 11. It’s a great feeling and it’s worked really well! It’s also a lot cooler here then – temperatures reach 42C/108F by the afternoon.
I’m glad it’s working out well for you! The temps are the same here, which is what makes it nice. I have a goal to start working out each day, so getting up that early gives Slim and I an opportunity to get a nice brisk walk in before the heat takes over.
That challenge seems like a lifetime ago, lol. Very cool that we originally met there! I was at such a different place in my life and business – living in a remote cabin, home schooling, kids were younger, business was in a different phase…
It’s always neat to look back and see how far you’ve come, and the steps you took to get from there to here!
Oh wow…thank you Lynn for this awesome reminder. With my Mom moving into assisted living, family emotions running high, upcoming visits from my in-laws (and a very neglected house), a paid work project (yea!), my regular part-time afternoon job, and my summer part-time work of moving sprinklers around the house, I do believe I’m saying “I can’t” about everything!
And definitely putting off working on getting my blog up and running. Always makes me wonder why I put the thing I want to do the most on the backburner?
So, I can find my 25th hour to do just that. …..thank you again!
Sounds busy, Judy! Hopefully things will calm down for you soon. Good point too, about putting off the things that matter to us most. I have been that way with fitness, even though it is one of my highest priorities this year. It really frustrates me! I think it boils down to breaking habits or changing routines, which I find most difficult.
Being aware of what we’re doing (and NOT doing) and why is the key to making decisions about change…
Since I’ve noticed my pile of can’ts, I’m focusing on the one activity that I most want to accomplish/means the most to me for the day. Then pat myself on the back when I’ve completed it. Even though it may only be 15 minutes workiing on my website for now until things settle down a bit, it feels good to know I did something. Thank you!
Thanks, Lynn. This was exactly the pep talk I needed this morning. I’ve got a major project that “can’ts” have delayed far too long and this morning I’m going to sit down, dissect and plan until I’ve got “cans” to the finish line.
You obviously are a master of the productive morning. I’m more the opposite. I think my most productive time may be after 5 PM. I need to look for ways to get into the swing of things in the morning better, though 3 AM– maybe not.
I say go with what works best for YOU. It’s hard to break (or change) your natural flow. Mornings work better for me now, but several years ago it was late evenings when I did my best work. You just have to go with it.
Good luck with your project! Hope you made a lot of progress with it and are getting on a roll!
Ok, you threw me a gauntlet, Lynn! I can’t live without diet Pepsi, so my challenge is to not drink Diet Pepsi for 30 days, beginning tomorrow. It might be a challenge because we are getting a heat wave in Finland and I’d love to drink cold diet Pepsi…
I did some productivity improvements not so long ago. I finally did that time log diary thing you always recommend we do…
How did the Time Log exercise work out for you? I love that one! 30 days, hey? You are one seriously ambitious gal, lol. I am not ready to give up my coffee for any real amount of time, lol – though I did start my day without it today, for a change.
I’m a tea-drinker, so it’s not such a big sacrifice to give up diet-Pepsi for a month. I can always drink tea and water….
The time log thing was very useful and I liked it especially because it seemed to give my days some kind of structure. I made some other changes to my routines – I try to start my day with content writing (at least for 1 hour) before I even check email or do client work.
Hi Lynn,
I’d have to say my challenge has been in getting that next writing client, and it hasn’t been easy this summer. I don’t know if it’s the heat or what, but I’m not landing it and I need to. And I’m putting in the time searching and communicating and know I need to step it up even one more gear because someone out there has to have a need, right?
Hey Mitch,
I’m not sure what angle you’re using, or what kind of writing clients you’re looking for, but the year is halfway over. The shopping season is about to kick into full swing. People are struggling with lost rankings & traffic right now. All angles you might use to compel them to get fresh content written NOW.
